Exams Equivalent to BÜYES/BUEPT

Boğaziçi University Senate approved the TOEFL® IBT and IELTS Academic (Paper-based / Computer-delivered) exams as equivalent to BÜYES/BUEPT. TOEFL® IBT and IELTS Academic (Paper-based / Computer-delivered) results are not considered valid unless approved by YADYOK. Only exams taken within the last two years are approved.

Institutional TOEFL® (ITP) results are not accepted. When the TOEFL® IBT and IELTS Academic (Paper-based / Computer-delivered) test results are announced, students have to come to the YADYOK Student Affairs Office and receive a certificate of approval.

Students who have achieved the required grade in the overall total of TOEFL® IBT and IELTS Academic (Paper-based / Computer-delivered) but have not achieved the minimum required score in the writing section can take TWE on the same day as BÜYES/BUEPT, and if they are successful, they can obtain an English proficiency certification after providing the TOEFL® IBT or IELTS Academic (Paper-based / Computer-delivered) results.

Students who have documented their English Proficiency with BUEPT/BÜYES, TOEFL® IBT or IELTS Academic (Paper-based/Computer-delivered) exams in the first semester are required to start their departments in the semester courses. Students who document their English proficiency cannot continue their preparatory education.

In case of changes to the minimum scores below, the new score values ​​are announced to students and new scores ​​are considered valid as of the announcement date.

Other Exemption Rules

In addition to those who prove their proficiency with BÜYES/BUEPT and the above-mentioned exams, the following students are exempt from the proficiency exam:

  • Those who have applied to an undergraduate or graduate program within two years of graduating from Boğaziçi University
  • Those who are re-admitted to the University while enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program of Boğaziçi University

The following students are exempt from the proficiency exam. An interview with the student may be required if deemed necessary:

  • Citizens of countries where English is the native language
  • Citizens of countries whose official language is English, provided that they have received their secondary education in English-medium schools in their country and document this with a diploma.

The following students are exempt from the proficiency exam, provided that not more than two years have passed after their graduation:

  • Those who have completed the last three years of secondary education in an English-medium educational institution in a country where English is the native or official language.
  • Those who have completed the last two years of their undergraduate, graduate or doctoral education in an English-medium higher education institution in a country where English is the native or official language.
  • Students who are currently enrolled in an English-medium higher education institution in a country where English is the native or official language, and who have received at least two years of education.
