Exam Content

BÜYES/BUEPT consists of three parts: Listening Comprehension (Listening), Reading Comprehension (Reading) and Writing.

The Listening Comprehension section consists of two parts: Selective Listening and Careful Listening. Listening texts are read once by an instructor. In Selective Listening section, students examine the questions for 3 minutes before the text is read and answer the questions while the text is being read. When the text reading is finished, students are given 3 minutes to check their answers.

In Careful Listening section, students take notes on a given blank paper before seeing the questions while the text is being read by the instructor. Students are advised to take notes of the main ideas, transitions between ideas, meaning relationships between expressions (cause-effect, contrast, contradiction, etc.), examples and definitions in the text. When the text is finished, students receive the question sheets and the students are given 15 minutes to answer the questions using their notes.

The Reading Comprehension section consists of two reading texts. In each text, students are expected to answer the questions by finding the relevant information in the text, either by skimming and scanning the text or reading the text carefully according to the question. For certain questions, students are expected to read and understand the text by paying attention to the details, and after finding the information in the relevant paragraph, they are expected to answer the questions by evaluating both the paragraph itself and the paragraphs before and after them. There are approximately 10 questions for each text.  These questions measure the skills of understanding and interpreting the main ideas and important details in the text, establishing a relationship between the ideas discussed in the paragraph, and associating these ideas with the paragraphs before and after, and with the whole text. Question can be in the form of short answer, multiple choice and matching.

In the Writing section, students are expected to write two essays (each about an A4 page long) on ​​two different topics. In the writing prompt, supporting ideas that the student can discuss are also given. Students can also choose to write their essays using the supporting ideas that they come up with instead of the ones given. The time allocated for each essay is 40 minutes, and both writing prompts are given to students at the beginning of the writing exam. Students can start from any writing topic. During the evaluation phase, grammatically and semantically competent academic English and a harmonious expression of ideas are taken as basis. Providing transitions between ideas and elaborating the presented thoughts by explanation, definition, description and exemplification are also indispensable elements of a successful academic composition.

Exam Evaluation Process

The evaluation of all sections of BÜYES/BUEPT is carried out by the instructors of YADYOK English Preparatory Unit.

The instructor who is the first marker of the exam paper in the Listening Comprehension and Reading Comprehension sections writes the grades on an exam evaluation chart. The second instructor, without seeing the grades given by the first instructor, grades the exam paper and fills in a separate exam evaluation chart. The third instructor compares both exam evaluation charts and gives the final grade.

In the Writing section, the first essay of each student is read by two different instructors and their grades are recorded in separate exam evaluation charts. The second essay is evaluated in the same way. In other words, a student's exam paper is evaluated by a total of 16 instructors in the following way:

For an objective assessment, only the student's 'exam number' and 'initials of his / her name and surname' are written on the exam papers. For the same purpose, no instructor can see the other's exam evaluation chart during the exam grading process.

Re-Assessment of the Pass-Fail Limit Students' Papers for Each Section: After all the papers are evaluated, the papers of the students who are on the pass-fail limit are read again and the grades in the exam evaluation chart are checked and any evaluation errors or technical errors are corrected. Thus, the exam papers of the students in question are evaluated by a total of 6 instructors in the following way:

In total, the exam paper of a student who is on the pass-fail limit is evaluated by 22 instructors.

Grading

Grading of the Listening Comprehension and Reading Comprehension Parts: Each question is worth 2 points. Some questions may have more than one gap. In order for the student to get 2 full points, he / she must answer all the correctly. The number of gaps in these questions is determined by the quality and quantity of the information to be tested.

Percentage Values ​​of Letter Grades Given to Students in the Listening Comprehension and Reading Comprehension Sections of BÜYES/BUEPT:

Students receive the following letter grades according to the percentage value of their scores, which is calculated by dividing their scores by the total available scores of the Listening Comprehension or Reading Comprehension sections. The letter grade S, which stands for the first letter of the word Satisfactory, indicates that the student received a passing grade from the relevant section / sections, and the letter grades F1, F2, F3, and F4, which stands for the first letter of the word Fail, indicate that the student failed in the relevant section / sections.

S: Total Score of the Listening / Reading Comprehension Section = 100-60%
F1: Total Score of the Listening / Reading Comprehension Section = 59-55%
F2: Total Score of the Listening / Reading Comprehension Section = 54-45%
F3: Total Score of the Listening / Reading Comprehension Section= 44-30%
F4: Total Score of the Listening / Reading Comprehension Section = 29-1%

Grading the Writing Section: Each student's Writing section papers are evaluated by a total of 4 instructors (two instructors per essay). When the evaluation is over, each student will have a total of 4 grades from the Writing section. Instructors use the letter grades (MA, A, D, etc.), which are shown below, when evaluating the compositions. Then, the numerical equivalents of these letter grades (75, 60, 55, ...) are taken and the arithmetic average of the four grades is calculated.

BÜYES/BUEPT Writing Grading Chart (letter grades and their numerical equivalents out of 100) is as follows:

Instructors do not see each other's grades while marking. After the grading is completed, the grades given by different instructors for each student's first and second essay are compared by the Testing Office. If a student receives inconsistent grades from two instructors for the same essay, the two instructors who have evaluated the essay come together and make a final decision. For example, if the same composition is assigned an A (60) and an NA (50) grade, this would be considered inconsistent grading. There may be only 1 grade difference between the grades given by two instructors for the same essay. (E-VG, VG-MA, MA-A, A-D, etc.)

BÜYES/BUEPT Writing Section Passing Threshold: In order to pass the Writing Section of BÜYES/BUEPT , the student must have an average of at least 56 in the Writing section. In other words, at least one of the 4 grades the student gets must be at least A (60). Below are examples of the scores needed to get a minimum average of 56 required to pass the Writing Section:

Percentage Values of Letter Grades Given to Students in the Writing Section BÜYES/BUEPT:

Students receive the following letter grades according to the percentage value of their Writing section grade averages. S means that the student has passed the Writing section; F1, F2, F3, F4 indicates she/he failed.

S: Grade Point Average for Writing Section = 100-56%
F1: Grade Point Average for Writing Section = 55%
F2: Grade Point Average for Writing Section = 54-50%
F3: Grade Point Average for Writing Section = 49-40%
F4: Grade Point Average for Writing Section = 39-1%

Calculation of the Total Score (Exam Grade) of Students Who Passes All Sections of the Exam:
BÜYES/BUEPT grade weights consist of the sum of 3 section grades: The weight of Listening Comprehension (L) is 30%, while it is 40% for the Reading Comprehension (R) 40%, and 30% for the Writing (W) and the total score is calculated by applying the following formula:

In order to pass the exam, the student must get an average of at least (56) in the Writing section, and 60 from the sum of the Listening Comprehension and Reading Comprehension sections. The general average of the students who meet these conditions is 60 and they pass the exam.

Letter Grades

The total scores obtained as a result of this calculation are announced as 'A, B, C+, C' letter grades according to the intervals specified below. Since the letter grading system is used at our university, the numerical equivalents of the grades are not announced.

The validity of the exam results is two years.

The letter S in the list where the grades of the students who failed the exam are announced stands for the word "Satisfactory", which means that the student has passed the relevant exam component. The letter F stands for the word "Fail". F grades range from F1 to F4. F1 is the highest failing grade while F4 is the lowest failing grade. ABS shows that the student did not take the exam (absent).

Calculation of BÜYES/BUEPT overall grade weights using the above formula is only valid for students who pass the entire exam at once. Students who benefit from the right to pass the exam in parts (partial pass) are required to reach the 60% success limit separately in the Listening Comprehension and Reading Comprehension sections. These students (like other students) are required to get a minimum average of 56 in Written Expression.

Right to Object to Exam Results

Students can object to the exam results on the day the exam results are announced. This process is carried out online. The purpose of the right to object is to ensure that any technical error is corrected at the initiative of the student. During the objection evaluation, the papers are not evaluated based on different criteria. Therefore, those who think that there is indeed a mistake in the exam grade are expected to object.

It is extremely important for students to fill out the online objection form completely and accurately. Objected exam papers are reviewed by the instructors the day after the objection application ends, and the results are announced on the YADYOK website at the end of the day of the evaluation.
